How to say “Is there a discount?” in Taiwanese Mandarin
yǒu dǎzhé ma?
有打折嗎?
Word by word
| Syllable | Means |
|---|---|
| yǒu | have |
| dǎ | strike, apply |
| zhé | discount |
| ma | ? |
When to use it
Discounts are counted the other way round from English. bā zhé means you pay 80%, so 20% off; qī zhé is 30% off; and bàn jià is half price. A sign saying dǎ jiǔ zhé is only 10% off, not 90%. In shops with fixed prices this is the polite way to ask, rather than haggling.
What you might hear back
xiànzài dǎ bā zhé.
