How to say “Not really, I'm still learning” in Taiwanese Mandarin
méiyǒu la, hái zài xué.
沒有啦,還在學。
Word by word
| Syllable | Means |
|---|---|
| méiyǒu la | not at all |
| hái | still |
| zài | in the middle of |
| xué | learning |
When to use it
Say a few words of Mandarin and someone will tell you your Chinese is great. Accepting the compliment with xièxiè is fine, but the Taiwanese reflex is to brush it off, and méiyǒu la is exactly how locals do it. The la softens it into something warm rather than a contradiction.
What you might hear back
nǐ zhōngwén hěn hǎo!
